Detailed Description of Error P0297
The OBDII error code P0297 indicates a "Vehicle over-speed condition". This code is triggered when the vehicle''s onboard computer, also known as the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), detects that the vehicle is traveling at a speed that exceeds the maximum allowed speed for a particular gear or driving condition.
This error code is often associated with automatic transmissions, but it can also be applicable to manual transmissions and other types of vehicles. The PCM monitors the vehicle''s speed using data from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and compares it to the maximum allowed speed for the current gear and driving conditions.
If the vehicle''s speed exceeds the maximum allowed speed, the PCM will set the P0297 code and may also illuminate the Check Engine Light (CEL) on the dashboard. In some cases, the vehicle may also enter a limp mode or reduce engine power to prevent damage to the transmission or other components.
Possible Causes of Error P0297
- Incorrect or faulty Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) calibration
- Malfunctioning or faulty VSS
- Transmission control module (TCM) malfunction
- Engine control module (ECM) malfunction
- Transmission solenoid failure
- Low transmission fluid level or dirty transmission fluid
- Worn or damaged transmission components (e.g. clutch packs, gear sets)
- Incorrect transmission fluid type or viscosity
- Vehicle modification or tuning that alters the transmission''s operating parameters
- Faulty or damaged wiring or connectors related to the VSS or transmission control systems
Possible Fixes for Error P0297
- Check and recalibrate the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) if necessary
- Replace the VSS if it''s faulty or malfunctioning
- Update the transmission control module (TCM) or engine control module (ECM) software if necessary
- Replace faulty transmission solenoids or other components
- Check and top off the transmission fluid level, and replace the fluid if it''s dirty or degraded
- Inspect and replace worn or damaged transmission components
- Use the correct transmission fluid type and viscosity
- Revert any vehicle modifications or tuning that may be causing the issue
- Repair or replace faulty or damaged wiring or connectors related to the VSS or transmission control systems
- Perform a transmission system scan to identify and address any underlying issues
