Detailed Description of Error P0064

OBDII error code P0064 is a generic trouble code that indicates a problem with the heater control circuit of the Bank 2 Sensor 3 oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor is a critical component of the vehicle''s emissions control system, and it helps to monitor the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases. The heater control circuit is responsible for heating up the oxygen sensor to its optimal operating temperature quickly, which allows it to provide accurate readings.

Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine opposite the number one cylinder. Sensor 3 is the downstream oxygen sensor, which is located after the catalytic converter. The downstream oxygen sensor is used to monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converter.

When the engine control module (ECM) detects a high voltage in the heater control circuit of the Bank 2 Sensor 3 oxygen sensor, it will trigger the P0064 error code. This code can cause the Check Engine light to illuminate, and it may also cause the vehicle to run poorly or have decreased fuel efficiency.

Possible Causes of Error P0064

  • Open or short circuit in the heater control circuit wiring
  • High resistance in the heater control circuit wiring or connectors
  • Faulty oxygen sensor heater element
  • ECM or PCM fault
  • Wiring harness damage or corrosion
  • Bad or corroded oxygen sensor connector
  • High mileage or worn out oxygen sensor
  • Catalytic converter failure

Possible Fixes for Error P0064

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors for any signs of damage or corrosion. Repair or replace as needed.
  2. Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the heater control circuit wiring and connectors.
  3. Replace the oxygen sensor if it is high mileage or worn out.
  4. Check the catalytic converter for any signs of failure. Replace if necessary.
  5. Use a scan tool to monitor the oxygen sensor readings and heater control circuit voltage.
  6. Consult a repair manual or a professional mechanic if the problem persists after trying the above steps.
